9 Questions to Ask Before Booking Your Wedding Photographer

Most couples go into photographer consultations not knowing what to actually ask. These nine questions will tell you everything you need to know before you sign.

The consultation call with a wedding photographer is one of the most important conversations you'll have during your planning process — and most couples spend it asking about packages and availability when the questions that actually matter are completely different.
Here are the nine questions worth asking before you commit.

01

Can I see a full gallery from a similar wedding?

Not highlights. Not a curated portfolio. A full gallery — 500 to 800 images from a single wedding that resembles yours in venue type, lighting, and vibe. This tells you what a client actually receives, not what the photographer chose to put on their website.

02

How do you handle difficult lighting situations?

Harsh midday sun. Tungsten-lit ballrooms. Ceremony venues with backlighting that turns everything silhouette. These situations are common. A photographer who's been shooting weddings for years should have an immediate, confident answer about how they approach them.

03

What happens if you're sick or have an emergency on my wedding day?

It happens. Ask what the backup plan is. A professional should have a network of photographers they trust and a clear protocol for this scenario.

04

Who exactly is going to show up?

Some studios list a "lead photographer" but send second shooters or associates for certain packages. Make sure you're clear on who specifically will be photographing your wedding — and if it's a team, ask to see work from all members.

05

How do you approach the portrait timeline?

Good wedding photography requires deliberate timeline building. Ask whether they'll work with your planner on the schedule, what their ideal portrait window looks like, and how they handle golden hour planning. The answer will tell you a lot about how experienced and invested they are.

06

What's your editing style, and can it change?

A photographer who says "I can shoot in any style" is telling you something important. Their personal aesthetic should feel non-negotiable — if they're the right fit, you'll love it already. If you're asking them to shoot differently than how they naturally work, something's off.

07

What's included in the contract regarding travel?

Especially important for destination work. Understand whether travel is billed at cost, included in the package, or handled differently depending on distance. Get it in writing.

08

How many weddings are you booking the same year as mine?

Volume is directly correlated to the depth of attention you'll receive. A photographer booking 40+ weddings a year is running a different operation than one booking 15-20. Neither is inherently wrong — but you should know which you're choosing.

09

What do you need from us to do your best work?

The answer to this question tells you everything about how your photographer thinks about the relationship. The best ones will have a real answer — something about timeline, or preparation, or the importance of moments over performance.
