Places to Elope in Utah | Antelope Island Guide

When couples ask me about the best places to elope in Utah, they usually have Zion, Moab, or the Salt Flats already in mind.

Antelope Island rarely comes up first — and that's exactly why I keep bringing it up.

Mountains behind you. The Great Salt Lake stretches out in every direction. Bison wandering the plains as they belong to another century. I photographed a bridal session here with a couple who brought their two horses, and I haven't stopped thinking about it since. It's dramatic and quiet and completely its own thing.

Here's what you actually need to know to plan yours.

01 / WHERE

Antelope Island sits in the middle of the Great Salt Lake, about 45 minutes north of Salt Lake City. You access it via a 7-mile causeway — and the drive in alone sets the tone. The island spans mountains, beaches, open plains, and wetlands, which means your photos can look entirely different depending on where you wander.

02 / WHEN

Spring (April–May): Beautiful light and fewer crowds, but bugs near the lake shore can be brutal. Plan accordingly.

Summer (June–August): Hot and hazy, but golden hour here is extraordinary. Arrive late afternoon and stay for the full show.

Fall (September–October): My personal recommendation. The light turns warm, the bugs are gone, the temperatures are perfect, and the island feels entirely yours.

Winter (November–February): Stark and moody. Snow-capped mountains reflecting off the lake. Worth it if you're up for the cold.

03 / PERMITS & ACCESS

No special photography permit is required — just the park entrance fee of $15 per vehicle. The island is open year-round. For larger events or receptions, additional permits apply — reach out to the park directly.

Pets are welcome on leash everywhere on the island. Horses are allowed too, with some advance planning for transportation and care.

04 / THE LIGHT

Arrive in the late afternoon. The way the sun drops behind the Promontory Mountains and reflects off the lake is unlike anything else in Utah. Wide, warm, and completely unhurried. Build your timeline around that window, and the island will do the rest.

05 / WHAT TO BRING

Layers — it gets windy and the temperature drops fast after sunset. Sturdy shoes for gravel roads and open terrain. Water and snacks, there's nothing on site. And if you're bringing animals, plan their logistics well in advance. It's worth every bit of effort.

06 / WHY THIS LOCATION

The seclusion is real. The light is extraordinary. And the variety of landscapes you get in a single location is unmatched anywhere else in the state. If you want portraits that feel cinematic, unhurried, and completely yours — this is the place.

Ready to plan your elopement here? I know this island, I know the light, and I'd love to help you make it yours.
