A Rainy Bear Lake Engagement Session for Alena and McCann
Most of what I know about this lake, I learned on days that went exactly to plan. This was not one of those days. It rained on Alena and McCann for every minute we were together, and I have never been more sure that a Bear Lake Utah engagement photographer should stop hoping for perfect weather. They were in town for a long weekend with McCann's family. We had a Friday in August and a sky that would not let up. We shot anyway.
They get married in Greenville, South Carolina. This was their Utah chapter, squeezed into a family trip, and it turned into the most them thing we could have made.
A White Picket Fence and a Quiet Friday
We met outside of Rucas on the Utah side. There is a white picket fence there, and a sidewalk running alongside it, and the whole corner feels like a town that has not bothered to change. Alena kept laughing at the rain. McCann kept pulling her back in. The pavement went dark and glossy and started reflecting them, which is the kind of gift you only get on a day like this one.
It was a Friday in August and it was quiet. That surprised me. Bear Lake in August is usually elbow to elbow. The rain handed us the whole street.
Twenty Five Minutes at the Marina
From there we drove to the marina and gave it twenty five, maybe thirty minutes. Gray water. Gray sky. Boats sitting still because nobody was going out in that. The wind kept catching Alena and McCann kept steadying her, and neither of them was performing for me. That is the thing about these two. There was almost nothing to direct.
The Beach, and the Downpour That Ended It
Then we headed down the road and pulled off at the beach. You cannot really go wrong here. The water is that impossible turquoise for a reason, and the shoreline keeps offering itself up mile after mile. We got about two steps onto the sand before it opened up. Real rain. The kind you feel in your shoes. So we called it, laughed about it, and made a plan for the morning.
Where to Shoot, From a Bear Lake Utah Engagement Photographer
If you want an official beach with parking and bathrooms and room to spread out, I would send you to Bear Lake State Park or Ideal Beach. Both are easy. Both are beautiful. But the pull offs along the road on the Utah side did everything we needed. Wide open water, no crowd, no fee, no walk from the car.
Garden City itself is underrated. The sidewalks and the fences and the small storefronts give you a completely different feeling than the water does, and putting both in one session makes the gallery feel like a place instead of a backdrop. Plan for an hour and a half to two hours if you want more than one stop.
The Morning After
We woke up early and went back out. The rain had softened into something moodier. Low clouds sitting right on the water. That flat, quiet light that makes everything feel like a memory instead of a photo.
It was the best part of the whole session. Alena and McCann were half awake and completely themselves, and we wrapped it before the day got loud.
I would not have gotten that sky on a clear evening. I would not have gotten that version of them either.
Planning for Weather at Bear Lake
Build in a backup morning if your trip allows it. Weather here turns fast and turns back just as fast, and a sunrise slot is almost always emptier than an evening one. Wear something with movement, because wet fabric photographs beautifully and stiff fabric does not. Bring a towel for the car and then stop thinking about your hair. The couples who let the day be exactly what it is always walk away with the better gallery.

Alena and McCann get married in Greenville, and I already know what that day is going to feel like. They do not need a perfect setting. They need each other and a little bit of room.
