A Golden Hour Engagement Session at the Mill Valley Public Library
Lizzi and Ian brought their copies of The Lord of the Rings to their engagement session. Not as a bit. Because those books actually mean something to them. That is the kind of detail I want as a Mill Valley engagement photographer, and it set the tone for the entire evening. They are both East Coast transplants. They get married at the Brazilian Room in October of 2027. And on this night, they wanted to start at a library.
An Hour Before Close
We met at the Mill Valley Public Library with about an hour left before it closed. It is free to shoot there, which still surprises people. It was busy. Back to school week had the place full, so we worked the edges and let the grounds carry it. Redwoods pressing up against the windows. Warm light coming through the glass at the exact angle you would ask for if anyone ever let you ask.
Then they pulled out the books. Ian held his open like he was actually reading, because he was. Lizzi laughed at him for it. I have photographed a lot of props. Almost none of them have belonged to the people holding them the way these did.
One Block Into the Redwoods
A block away the neighborhood turns into something else entirely. The streets go narrow, the redwoods tower straight over the pavement, and everything underneath them goes soft and green and quiet. So we walked. We found a small bridge with a creek trickling under it and I am still thinking about that frame.
I will say this plainly. Some of the best light I have ever worked in. Filtered down through two hundred feet of redwood and landing on two people who had completely stopped thinking about the camera.
Muir Beach, Until the Light Gave Out
From there we drove to Muir Beach. Parking is free, which matters more than it should. We shot by the lagoon pools while the haze sat low on the water and the sun went gold and then went orange and then was gone.
One of the prettier golden hour beach sessions I have photographed anywhere near San Francisco. Those pools go still and hold the whole sky, and Lizzi and Ian just kept walking into them.
Planning Yours, From a Mill Valley Engagement Photographer
We covered all three spots in about three hours, which is exactly why I recommend a half day for a session like this. One hour gets you one location and a lot of rushing. Three gets you a library, a redwood neighborhood, and a beach at golden hour, with room to actually breathe in between.
Everything we shot was free. The library grounds cost nothing, the neighborhood is public street, and Muir Beach parking is free. Start at the library roughly ninety minutes before it closes so you are not the last two people in the building, then chase the light west toward the coast.
The Brazilian Room in October
Lizzi and Ian get married at the Brazilian Room in October of 2027. Two people who moved across the country, found each other, and still bring their favorite books to a photo session because that is honestly just who they are.
A hundred out of ten. I would do this one again tomorrow.
